This Month’s e-Health Tip:

Join the rat race–and live longer

Feel like you’re in a rat race? Well, maybe you should be. The active life can do more for you than just keep you shapely.

Researchers who studied rodents on a running wheel found they developed twice as many new brain cells as their sedentary cage mates. And those who were assigned learning tasks also showed the new cell development.

Researchers don’t know why exercise creates new cells. It may be the additional oxygen flow to the brain. Or maybe a link to a time when we fled a saber tooth tiger, our hearts pumping out increased oxygen–while our brains registered the new territory.

The healthy hint: Get out that mystery book or crossword puzzle and prop it on your stationary bike or treadmill. It may just give your brain a boost.
